The fun, and sometimes frustrating part of picking out art, is that there really aren’t any rules. After inquiring about wall art wisdom from the HOUSEWORKS team of designers, they all basically said the same thing: It’s subjective, and you’re the one who has to live with it every day.
So in theory, choosing wall art should be easy. If you love it, buy it. However, you may lean toward my thinking, which is to way overthink it. There are so many choices and it can get overwhelming. While the HOUSEWORKS team is right in saying you have to like it because you have to look at every day, they did offer a few tips to help guide you, and I’ll share those with you below.
If you’re still not sure and you’re looking to fill an empty space on your wall, head in to HOUSEWORKS and see what speaks to you. We recently got a lot of new artwork in our showroom. Scroll below for peek at some of our newest pieces!
Without further ado, I give you your Wall-art-wisdom:
COLOR CHOICE
If you have a neutral color scheme, you can choose to let art be the accent. Bring in an accent color with your artwork. OR If you have a limited color palette with just three or so colors, you can choose to tie in the art with the same color palette to keep a cohesive look. There really isn’t a right or wrong here, it’s just a personal choice in color direction.
SIZE AND SCALE
If something just isn’t right, more often than not it’s because your size and scale may be off. Most people purchase smaller pieces than a wall requires. It’s important to remember that wall art isn’t a postage stamp, let that beauty make an impact on your wall. In the case of art size, bigger often is a better option. One of our team members suggests to take a photo of the wall art on your wall within your room. Your eye can better decipher any issues of things that are a little askew from a photo, rather than in real life.
DEFINE A SPACE
Many people don’t often think of this, but you can use wall art to define your spaces within an open concept home. If you have a long wall, think of your artwork like a rug on the floor. It helps to section off a particular area, and let your eye know that one space is different from the other.
ART + ACCESSORIES
While the wall art in itself is decor, you can decorate around the artwork to tie into your room. Create balance with various heights of accessories under the artwork.
THE ART OF HANGING ART
Hanging artwork, is an art. A safe bet: Place the center of the piece 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Above a sofa, leave 4 to 8 inches of space between the sofa’s back and the art’s edge.
